3250 Eugene Court My career objective is to find a new technology project which can take advantage of my comprehensive business development skills and experience. I have detailed some projects which represent a more in depth presentation of some specific points outlined on my resume.
During my position at Sarasep, Inc. as Business Development Manager - Molecular Biology Separations, I organized the design of the DNASepTM brochure. The brochure was one of many projects necessary to introduce a new technology. DNASepTM, an HPLC column, is a separation tool which separates DNA by its length. These columns have several unique characteristics and may replace present, routine analytical methods used by molecular biologists. The brochure was printed by an advertising agency, however the layout, copy and general design was mine. The colors and art were chosen by the ad agency and another team member with my approval. The sales cover presents four benefits of DNASepTM, - validation, automation, quantification, and purification. Improvements in these areas are needed by biopharmaceutical companies.
The brochure portrays an artists' concept of a strand of DNA extending from the background through to the foreground. An unexplored wilderness mountain range is seen in the background. The inside cover shows a rugged explorer (scientific researcher) who needs rugged tools for rugged explorations (scientific research). The copy gives more details about the benefits described on the front cover. Specific examples are also shown. The back page shows pictures of the products.
A major purposes of the brochure was to help attract marketing partners. Concepts and application notes were key to my presentation before high level managers (VP and President level) at Beckman Instruments, Hewlett-Packard - Analytical Chemistry Division and Dionex Instruments.
Over the past few months, I have designed and installed two internet websites (www. jimpowers. com and www.robosynthon.com) I was paid by Robosynthon, Inc. I have learned specifics about Website design and domain installation. The internet is a powerful tool for marketing. Websites can give customers information on products and company news. At Sarasep, I monitored a newsgroup - bionet. mol-biol.mthds-rgents as a market research tool. I collected information, complaints and problems about competing products and other separation technology. This information, which I have collected for two years, is the basis for a presentation I have made to several companies about "Biochromatography and the Biopharmaceutical Market." These presentations were made to high level managers at Jones Chromatography and J&W Scientific.
In May, 1990, I sold the first Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) instrument manufactured by Spectra Physics Analytical to a scientist at Searle/Nutrasweet, Inc. Mt. Prospect Illinois. The customer wanted to use this instrument to study artificial sweeteners. CE is a new analytical chemistry technology for separating biomolecules by electrical potential, sometimes the voltage reached as high as 30,000 volts. Before my employment at SPA a small "skunkworks" team of engineers and scientists designed and began producing prototypes of this analytical instrument. Each CE retails for about $35,000. The team designed and began producing the instrument in 18 months. I was the first Product Specialist hired and my job was to initiate sales, determine customer applications, evaluate and troubleshoot the suitability of the product vs. the design concept. As with any new product introduction, there are unforeseen problems. Adjustments and redesigns are necessary to make the design suitable to the market. This was more than just learning a new product, I needed to learn a new separation technology. Although, several other companies manufacture CE systems, I found several specific applications which were especially suitable for our instrument. These applications resulted in sales throughout the world. Indeed, I traveled to China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan to install and train scientists in these applications.
